Many high school and college English courses now include some element of analysis in their writing curriculum. This type of composition can range from investigating poetry to interpreting billboards to breaking down public service announcements. One route that more advanced high school courses and universities are taking is that of analyzing public speeches via a Rhetorical Analysis Essay.

What is Rhetoric?

Rhetoric is the use, manipulation, and negotiation of language to achieve a specific purpose. Most often the term is associated with politics and education, where you might hear of a President’s “political rhetoric” or the “rhetoric” of the Department of Education, but actually all language use is a type of rhetoric.

Rhetoric simply means how you use language in order to achieve your purposes. So if you are writing a children’s book, the word choice and sentence structure may be simple but full of color and dialogue. On the other hand, a television advertisement urging individuals to donate to their nearest animal shelter will entice the listener with emotionally-charged words like “abused” or “neglected."
