As a freshman at the University of illinois in 2007, Benn caught 54 passes for 676 yards and two touchdowns. The next season, Benn made 67 grabs for 1,055 yards and three TDs.

But in 2009, Benn's numbers dipped to 38 receptions for 490 yards and two touchdowns, and Illinois finished with a dismal 3-9 record. Benn did not manage an 100-yard receiving game after doing so five times the year before.

Still, Benn decided to skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft, and he did not do so without reason. Despite his sub-par statistics in 2009, Benn is forecast by some analysts as a first-round choice in the 2010 NFL draft, ranking him as the No. 2 wide receiver prospect behind Oklahoma State's Dez Bryant.
