New Zealand dairy exporter, Fonterra, is again expected to import more than one-million tonnes of palm kernel expeller (or PKE) this year as a cheap alternative supplementary feed for its dairy herds in New Zealand.

PKE is a product of the palm oil industry that is responsible for large-scale deforestation of tropical rainforests in areas of Indonesia such as East Kalimantan, Sumatra and Borneo. This massive deforestation has led to the increased rate of extinction of wildlife such as orangutans and Sumatran tigers whose rainforest habitat is fast disappearing.
