Quoting a line from William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, “We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.” Indeed dreams are an important part of our conscious and subconscious lives. According to an article by Christine Glenn, Phd, “Understanding Dreams, Emotions and Poor Decisions” (last accessed 12/21/10), conscious experience is influenced by unconscious beliefs about everything. Dreams are an aspect of unconscious beliefs. According to Glenn, “When our best efforts to make positive decisions, to change our behavior or to understand our emotions fail, we can be sure that unconscious influences are involved.” It is possible then, according to some studies, that dreams can have an unconscious influence on life decisions.

Types of Dreams

An article, “Types of Dreams” posted on the website, Dream Moods, lists several types of dreams. There are daydreams, categorized as a level of consciousness between sleep and wakefulness. False awakening dreams occur when one believes he has awoken and gone about his daily routine, only to discover he was dreaming. Lucid dreams are the dreams that occur when one realizes he is dreaming. Nightmares are very disturbing dreams that cause the dreamer to awake frightened and feeling anxiety. Recurring dreams are the ones that repeat themselves without variation.

Healing dreams are of particular interest. According the Dream Moods article, “Healing dreams serve as messages for the dreamer in regards to their health. The Ancient Greeks called these dreams "prodromic". Many dream experts believe that dreams can help in avoiding potential health problems and healing when you are ill or when you are grieving. Research shows that asthma and migraine sufferers have certain types of dreams before an attack. Your bodies are able to communicate to your mind through dreams. The dreams can "tell" you that something is not quite right with your bodies even before any physical symptoms show up.”
