The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is a program run by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). NCHS is a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a federal agency under the Department of Human Health and Services (HHS).

What Does NHANES Do?

NHANES is a survey that combines interviews and physical examinations to assess the health of adults and children in the United States. The survey was launched in the 1960s. In 1999, it became a continuous program that attempts to examine a nationally representative sample of about 5,000 people a year.
