Any visit to Paris must include a visit to Shakespeare and Company, the quintessential independent bookstore. Its history is as famous as its name, for it is much more than a store.

Shakespeare and Company is a way of life for hundreds of starving writers who have not only fed themselves on its wares, but also worked for room and board from its owners. As Sylvia Beach wrote in her memoir, it was during the 1920s, as censorship reigned in America, that scores of freedom-seeking literary pilgrims "crossed the ocean and settled in Paris and colonized the Left Bank of the Seine."

These were some of the names of Sylvia Beach's "subscribers" when Shakespeare and Company was a lending library. Gradually, the fame of the store spread to London and lured T.S. Eliot, who crossed the Channel to do readings and discovered Djuana Barnes. Willa Cather visited the shop on her visits to Paris in 1921 and 1923, becoming friends with Sylvia Beach and her partner, Adrienne Monnier.
